Yvonne Pointer to Speak at DOJ’s Missing Children’s Day Ceremony

Since 1983 citizens, public agencies, and private organizations have gathered in communities across the country to commemorate Missing Children’s Day by renewing their commitment to find missing children, celebrating heartwarming stories of recovery, and honoring those whose tragic loss remains in our hearts and memories. Annual events observe the anniversary of the May 25, 1979 disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz from a New York street corner.

This year’s ceremony will highlight the Justice Department’s ongoing commitment to protect children and bring missing children home. Featured speakers include Department of Justice officials, Ernie Allen, President and CEO of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and Yvonne Pointer, the parent of an abducted child and international educator on child abduction and youth violence.
Guests will include families of missing children, child advocates, and federal, state, local, and tribal agency representatives who have supported programs to locate and recover missing children.

During the ceremony, the extraordinary efforts of America’s law enforcement officers, private citizens, and organizations on behalf of missing children will be recognized.

The ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 23, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. EDT, in the Great Hall of the Main Justice Building. Attendees may enter on the corner of Constitution Avenue and 10th Street, NW, Washington, DC, 20530. Gloria Pointer Teen Movement Initiative West Africa

In 2002, a young man in Ghana, West Africa was walking down the street wondering why he was faced  with so many struggles in life and  wondered if God really loved him. Anthony was forced to drop out of school to help his mother make ends meet. Many days he had gone without food wondering where his family's next meal  would come from. As he walked,  he saw an article on the ground, picked it up and read it. As unbelievable as it may be, the article was about the inspirational story of Yvonne Pointer, and the struggles she faced everyday in dealing with the murder of her eldest daughter.

Anthony Tay wrote Yvonne Pointer explaining his sorrow concerning the murder of her child, his wish to someday be a doctor, and his prayers that someone would help him obtain the money. His prayers are being answered by Yvonne and her friends who currently send Anthony and other children in Ghana money to further their education. Their dreams can now start to become  a reality.

Anthony Tay (then 17 years old) was so touched that he wanted to help others in the way Yvonne helped him. He founded the Gloria Pointer Teen Movement Initiative in West Africa, where he is dedicating his life to assist African youth in obtaining an education and a healthy life style in memory of Gloria.
